RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970, in Newark. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her political activism, acting abilities and ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the nickname "delicate, sensitive" when she was just eight years old. Latifah began singing in the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was the catalyst. She was in touch with students and the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was requested by Latifah's daughter to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King, invited her to perform at the school dance.
